Comet Collapses
Sometime late this week the entire back portion of the Comet collapsed. This was the tallest remaining part of the Comet since the lift hill collapsed in January of 2005. The destruction is massive. The entire section collapsed into itself. very little collapsed onto the parking lot.

Can’t say i’m supprised. That section was suffering from a lot of rot on the footings. The uprights were bareley hanging on last fall.
The fact that it ‘fell in on itself’ is not supprising also. The internal guy wires were still in fairly good condition, and extended up midway, and to the top of the section. Thus holding the structure from splaying out, and holding it in towards the center.

I’d forgotten about the interior support until I started looking through my photos from the fall. So, it makes perfect sense about most of it falling inward.
It really was in horrible shape. I was amazed that the back was still standing. It was so tall. I’m surprised the roof of the station fell before that did. They fell a year apart. Creepy. How much is going to fall next May? I don’t even want to think about it.

i think its a shame that not only the roller coaster sat there and rotted, but even the whole fact that the park closed. I believe its because of poor management, rides not being maintained, and them being sued,but I’ve had some great memories there, and went on the comet numerous times. I remember going on the comet like ten times in a row, and also going on the jr comet. I’ve got the video and the book, I’ve also took personal pics of me and my nephews sitting in the comet cars back in 1998, before they were demolished. I’m about to make a model of the comet and also have it running, I’ll put it on youtube when its done and send the comet fans my email, well so long comet fans and lincoln park fans
